I recommend taking a beginner's training course. The dealer who sold you the bike should know how to find some in your area. If you don't want to go that route or the wait is too long, find someone who is experienced on bikes and long on patience to teach you. I strongly recommend you find a small, cheap, very used bike for practice. Something that just barely runs. It would be a shame to bang up your new Savage.
If you have a friend teach you, take the course anyway as soon as you can. I took a course after riding for 20+ years and it helped me correct some long standing bad habits.
